If you have never used a machine before I would highly recommend a computerized sewing machine. Mechanical machines are a pain because you have to set everything up yourself and is kind of a pain. With a computerized Sewing Machine you just simply press the stitch you want and it automatically sets up the width and length for you. Plus some computerized sewing machines have One-Step Automatic Buttonholes so you simply put the button in the buttonhole foot, bring down this flag and hit the foot control and the machine automatically makes a perfectly balanced buttonhole. I would suggest the Janome HT-2008 Sewing Machine. It has 50 stitches and 3 automatic buttonholes. Janome makes beautiful machines and they sew smooth. I would recommend you purchase it from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew. They have it for only $299 and you can purchase an optional Sewing Kit ($100 Value) for only $9.99 more. It is also free shipping and no tax (If you are not in New York). Here is a link:

It's impossible to guess. What you'll need, from the items given, is a machine with a good straight stitch, possibly a zigzag, and a buttonholer that doesn't drive you to distraction.
On a very tight budget, I'd suggest a used machine from a local dealer that's been overhauled. Something like a Singer 401
would be about perfect.
