Times New Roman or Courier?
Likely the Times Roman typeface. This is considered one of the most readable, used in newsprint for years and - of course - developed byt he NY TImes.
I don't know but if it's worth going to the hassle, maybe if you scout round a secondhand bookshop, the library, your granny's bookcase, a junk shop(?), you might find something like a Women's Institute recipe book from the 40s which would give you something to compare with the fonts available to you. Alternatively, the library might have one of those big printers' books of typefaces...

Or... old photos down at the pub? (Good excuse to go on a 'research trip' ;-).)
