The rest of the iron curtain through Germany was not much less formidable as a barrier. Access to border zones was restricted, so approaching the border was not easy. On a visit to the inner-German frontier in the 1970s we were told about a German shepherd dog who escaped from the East, because he was tempted by a female (Yahoo doesn't like the correct word!) with the western frontier police! He would have had more success than most humans at jumping the fence and his minders did not fire on him. On one occasion a group of eastern soldiers were digging new fortifications with other GDR troops (from a different regiment) training their guns on them.
