SMILE- R is silent I think this is a tongue in cheek Question. smart thinking Viking!
Yes our country seems to be in a shambles in spite all those Harvard graduates advising the Government & the Civil Service. They are supposed to be highly regarded for their skills in the areas of Reading, wRiting and Rithmatic! The silence of R factor being absent from the Equation! it isnt silent ._. Because people from Boston do not pronounce the R sound... It's because of something called post-vocalic R.
A Harvard Professor as most likely a New Englander, would pahk his cah in Hahvahd yahd.
This R dropped out of most British English speech and also in New England and some parts of the South. In these areas, R is only voiced when it comes before a vowel. Are you saying when you smile you cant say R's??? I don't really know what your talking about, but good luck finding the right answer! because the vowel 'a' precedes 'r' as in 'harvest.' 'harlot' and 'harbor'.

good day It is hardly silent, that is just the way native new englanders pronounce it.
