When did the Comic's stop being funny?

The word "Comic" and ""Funnies" means humor. So, when did they start to mean more. (Not counting adventure). Now, comics deal with day to day lives and racial issues.

Sadly satire and politics rule the day in most form of cartooning lately. When Bill Watterson quit writing "Calvin and Hobbes."
