Tis the nature of elitism, and people respond to it in that way.

It's more conspicuous in the Arts industry because all artists who become successful are tokens. Not to say they're untalented, but for every famous artist, there are more than 10 other artists of equal calibur who are just as creative, original, and innovative. No artist becomes pupular unless they are embraced by the elite, and that affects other artists who affiliate with one who is already established.
