Question:

Why do we have critics?

I wrote this poem and asked people if they thought it was good, and all they could do was critice it! How rude?!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

You asked for criticism. You got it. Now you're saying you didn't get what you wanted? Who is rude here, exactly?

All works of art are subject to criticism. Part of an artist's training is learning to accept criticism--not to agree with what every critic says, but to judge what is a good critique and what can be overlooked.

You have to learn to detach from what other people are saying. Many people think that only negative comments qualify as criticism. That is not true. Positive comments also qualify as criticism.

It is bad criticism to only point out what is wrong or poorly done in a work of art. It is rude to make any personal comments about the artist.

Good criticism is an evaluation of what is good about the work and what could be improved.

Cheer up. It sounds like the people who offended you were bad critics. Keep sharing your work, but be sure to stay detached enough from what people say so that your feelings are not hurt.

Nobody's work is perfect. Even very well established writers have to pay attention to their critics, and sometimes hear some harsh judgements of their work.
