Question:

How has cooking evolved into art form over the years?

I find it interesting the number of cooking celebs there are now. The term "foodie" was not something I'd heard 10 years ago, nor was there anything like The Iron Chef or the million other cooking shows out there. I find it incredibly boring, but I suppose a lot of people like it. I would not say anything in relationship to creativity, but I would say that food preparation has become peformative. There was far more creativity way back when women (and it was always women) had to work with next to nothing and still come up with something different for meals. Now, people are being paid to create these edible "works of art." I find it humourous--it goes in and out the same way, so who cares? It's like the fashion industry--there is nothing new or creative about what they're selling; it's all performance and style over substance. So yes, cooking has "evolved?" because some people are now interested in how to use new and unusual food products not available before; however, I don't see it as art--it's people cashing in on a fad.
