My Christian friend and I had this very discussion last week. I find it interesting how UNclear this commandment is. Taken very literally, the simple act of weeding (killing a plant) could be a violation of this commandment.

I've heard that the Hebrew word used in the Bible is NOT the Hebrew word for 'murder' (which does exist), but the all-encompassing word for 'kill.' I don't know Hebrew, so I can't confirm this myself.

However, there is so much violence and "justified" killing in the Bible, it seems to only make sense that it means murder. Even then, though, how do you define 'murder?' Is is simply the cold-blooded, 'I want your money so I'll kill you for it' variety? What about killing a cheating spouse? What about euthenasia? What about the death penalty? What about abortion? What about self-defense? How would you define self-defense?

There are so many shades of gray it is dizzying. It's a great topic of discussion, though. Good question!
