It is commonly said that there are 3 layers of skin, epidermis, dermis are the only parts which actually comprise the biological components of skin. Each of these is composed of 5 and 3 layers each, in that order.

The third layer which underlies these two are a body layer but is not an integumentary part of skin.

So the proper answer, is 8 (eight) and the idea of a third layer is just "stretching" .............
