Question:

Guitar Improvisation?

I always see guitarists improvising mindlessly and don't have to stop and think where the next note is. It come natural.

So I was wondering if someone could please tell me what I can do to attain the same skills? I've heard it involves memorizing scales, although I'm not sure.

P.S.
I do not understand music theory and the accompanying lingo, so please be gentle :-)

Thanks!

It's really not that hard. What you need to do is know what notes you can play, and what you can't.

Once you know what notes you can play, just play whatever notes you feel like playing.

There are different ways to breakdown the fretboard of the guitar. Usually you learn boxes. There is the major box and there is the Vth box. Most songs have one key and you only need to play one scale.

Once you learn one key, you have them all, because they are movable. The G scale starts on the 3rd fret of the low E string. The A scale start two steps up from that and so on.

Most people learn 'Pentatonic' or 5 note scales, which are even easier than the major scale. If you play rock, you should play the "Minor Pentatonic' scale. So if you are rocking out in E then you play E minor pentatonic scale. Typically, rock songs go from E to D or maybe E and G, aside from A and B. You can play the same E minor Pentatonic Scale to all of them. You could also try different keys (which are then called different modes) like D major, even C major for a Spanish sound etc...
