Question:

Artists and politics?

do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing that some artists are involved in politics.
I used to think that art should be art, and a bit more ... hmm .. honest and above politics, but I've just read some old interviews done with Harold Pinter, and it made me change my mind
what do you think?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

Some 'artists' are as qualified as mathematicians, engineers, biologists, and academics to hold and proselytise a particular political view. However it seems that the term 'artist' is somewhat devalued these days (as is the term 'engineer'), and just because an entertainer gains some notoriety, does not suddenly elevate them to the status of philosopher. We all have opinions, but few of us are fortunate enough to have a hot-line to the press.
It is a bit worrying that the fashionable view espoused by 'artists' is taken as a keystone of thought by some impressionable, and less questioning sections of our society.
That said, there are academics that have taken the 'art' route to wealth and celebrity status, who have valid arguments to make, even though they will most likely fall on one particular side of the political fence!
