Question:

How do you compose music?

Not by using technology/computer or any technical/algorithmic procedure. What do you do to compose music (e.g. create tunes) in your mind?
What do you do to remember some tune that flashes for a while and vanishes and you don't recall it later?
Also writing the music on the staff is the only method for quick method to store it?

Funny thing is that sometimes these flashes are in sleep/dream or semiconscious states.

First I keep humming the tune so I remember it. Then, there are two things I do from there...

My fave thing to do is to record it using a cheap tape recorder. All I have to do is sing it and then play it back for future reference. After recording the tune, I then write down the lyrics. Now I have both the tune AND the words, and I can get on with my life!

Another method I use is when I sit at a piano or keyboard (or any instrument really) and play it out. Then, using lined paper, I write down the music notes with the lyrics underneath.

If all you have is your mind, then I just start out by humming the tune. Pretty soon the humming turns into singing and I add lyrics. There! A fabulous masterpiece!

HUMMING is key here in remembering music. The second it starts flashing, start humming. Then, just like before, it will turn into singing.

Nope I have tapes I keep. It's less than $10 to buy a tape recorder, so don't say you don't have enough money for that. And the tapes... I have seen them at the Dollar Store!

Hope I helped... keep writing music!
