Well that depends on what field you are interested in:

theatre
painting
photography
writing
dance
art history
film
ballet

The best way to get started would be to pick the area of art you are interested in first. Let's say you are interested in journalism, for example. Does your school have a student newspaper? You could write for the newspaper to get some writing clips. Then you could ask your newspaper's editor for help on finding journalism scholarships to apply for. You can also do informational interviews with your local city newspaper's reporters; whether its sports writing, arts writing, film, or editorial.

Picking a career goal is important but so is putting a plan together of how you will achieve that career goal.

1. Find an organization etc., that offers classes or the opportunity for you to do that art form.
2. Develop good relationships with your instructors b/c they will act as professional references for you in the future.
3. Do informational interviews with professionals who actually work in the area you are interested in. Informational interviews will give you the opportunity to ask a lot of questions and will provide you with information that will help you put your artistic career plan together in small steps.

I got started in radio by volunteering at a local community radio station, which eventually led me to a career in radio broadcast.

When you first start out, you may have to volunteer your time either in an internship that is paid/unpaid, or take classes on the subject. The next step is to get experience in the field you want to have a career in; at the entry level. Then once you are at the entry level, you can work your way up to a higher position based on opportunities to get more experience.

You can do informational interviews at any time during your career process, at the beginning, middle or end, depending on which direction you go. Does that make sense?

Good luck!
