I guess the answer depends on what you think music is; what distinguishes it from merely noise. (or in the case of 3'42 - lack of the same). I would beg to differ from Cage's opinion. Music is humanities' attempt to articulate feelings, emotions and concepts that are inadequately portrayed by mere words. Aesthetically it should be beautiful. Unfortunately, rarely in the modern era is this the case. This is why no great music (or art of any kind for that matter) has been created since WWII. Maybe all the beauty was used up in the three centuries or so before then. Mr Cage, whilst original, did little to revive aesthetically pleasing music.
