Question:

I haven't been formally educated in music, but am keen to explore Philip Glass' works. Any advice?

He's got a massive back catalogue, and what I've read about him and his work seems pretty dense to a relative outsider.

I've been eyeballing your question since it was posted. Like you, I am not formally educated in music. As far as I can see, Glass' compositions are very repetitive and often complex. I think "dense" is the appropriate word to use here. Have you explored similar works? Look over some of Glass' work and see if it feels comfortable. Glass is one of those musicians who spent several years studying the masters like Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. These were his primary influences and, as such, you might understand his work a little better by following in his footsteps. Have you explored Beethoven and Bach? Perhaps Schubert? I don't know where I'm going with this so I'll leave you with some words of wisdom:

Good luck.
