Question:

Epic Story?

So I have this assignment to write an epic story (meaning it includes a heroic character, Homeric simile, epithets, epic conventions, etc.)
At first, I was really excited. I love creative writing, it's sort of my niche. However, I have absolutely no ideas about the story and plot.
I started off writing this completely made up rendition about this fictional place but it went nowhere (or at least, I think it did). Then I tried to make it more humorous and silly and created this battle between heaven and hell but I really don't think that was a good idea to begin with.
Any suggestions would be very, very, VERY helpful.

Start with a character. It will be easier to write about a person with flaws, goals, personality than to write about an abstract concept, such as a battle between Heaven and Hell, or a madeup place.

Follow the character on his or her journey. Sometimes you may not even know where it will go in the beginning, but if you make your character real, then that character can lead you along. Start with a name, a look and a quick background story for the character. Only child? Orphan? Raised by wolves? Then set up a task for the character. Must find the throne of Xeron, must seek out the queen of Nimor for the next clue to the puzzle. Be sure to give the hero flaws — easily loses temper, easily distracted. Can't hear, see, hates mayonaisse. Something. Be sure the hero must overcome whatever his weaknesses are to get the prize. Voila, epic story.

Have fun!
