Why is Richard Wright not taught in schools?

With race relations playing such a big part in American debate, it seems like we should make books like NATIVE SON & BLACK BOY a mandatory read in our high schools.

I think it's the same reason Steinbeck's not taught. Few students know about 'The Grapes of Wrath', and 'The Pearl.' I bet very few have ever heard of Tortilla Flat. There is even no John Steinbeck Society at the MLA!
What does he have in common with Wright? Not the Race question.
They both at one time, dabbled in, embraced and advocated the ideals of communism in America at a time when the specter of Karl Marx was haunting uncle Sam. Hence both were shunned at home. The buck stops with the MLA.
