Why is art so important?

Important to whom?
If you're starving or wrongly imprisoned or being mutilated because of your gender or being whipped for a societal transgression, art isn't all that important at the moment.
But that having been said - art is a great way to get people to see these atrocities and others from a new, guttural perspective ... one that doesn't come from from the forebrain while reading, but one that registers at your core.
