Sketchbook. I assume this is for a drawing class. In that case, draw what you see. Draw the things on your desk. Draw a tree. Draw you cat or dog. Carry it with you and draw wherever you are.

A sketchbook is a visual diary. It's a log of what you saw that was interesting. Use your sketchbook the way you would use a camera and record what catches your eye.

Once, when my daughter was nine, I found her sitting on the patio sketching. I asked her what she was drawing and she said, "The shadows on the ground." I would not have noticed the "negative space" produced by the shadows, but they caught her eye. What will you find that someone else wouldn't notice?

Don't be put off by that 9x12 page size, either. You might sketch two items on the same page. The point your teacher is trying to make is to draw large. Fill the space. Too many beginning artists restrict themselves to a space an inch square -- the size of a doodle. Your teacher wants you to draw big enough to see what you are doing and be able to create some detail in your drawing.
