Question:

Are there any plays that deal with "journeys"?

I am teaching an introduction to literature class, and the entire theme of the novels and poetry we are reading revolves around journeys and self-discovery. I have the novels and poetry figured out, but I cannot for the life of me think of any plays that fit the above criteria. Perhaps the problems revolves around the fact that most plays occur in a single locale because of the performative aspect of plays in general (i.e., multiple locales would require more sets). To give you an idea of what we will be reading, I am using TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY, THE ROAD (Corman McCarthy), and A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This might be a little dense? Shakespeare's RICHARD II is all about his self-discovery. It's written in rhyming couplets and has stunning imagery. The play is his realization of what it means to be a king and that he was a very bad one. It's one of my favorites, but not big on 'action'. Beautiful language. The final soliloquy when he is in prison is a virtual 'Now I realize what I am and how badly I've been doing'. I would've loved having it taught to me, but I'm a bit of a romantic. Gorgeous poetry. All the best!
