Question:

What makes people artistic or creative?

I'm doing a project for my AP Psychology class and I'm wondering what makes people artistic. Do you think people are just born with a natural talent to draw, for example, or does everyone have the same chance to succeed? Can everyone become an excellent singer, for example, with the right amount of training? What do you think?

There is talent and there is technique.
The merging of the two make an artist.

Technique represents skills learned, whether it is playing scales on a trumpet or a tour jete in ballet - there are many technique heavy people who masquerade as artists; however most of them find work in the studio.

Talent is potential, whether it's innate speed, body type, vision or any number of things. We start using terms like charisma when discussing someone with talent.

The creative side tends to be too much like the Prop Game on Who's Line Is It Anyway? I can do this, I can do that - a display of creativity seems to be boorish and narcissistic.

Developing one's craft, applying the instrument (whether it's a paint brush, typewriter or the human body) is critical in becoming an artist.
Nurturing talent builds upon what exists already - everyone has some talent. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, "talent is cheap."

Artists work.
Rarely is there a burst of creative energy that is a one time thing, artists discuss a "body of work" because it's a long time if not life time thing. 80% of what is done is exploring one's craft, about 15% is the application of talent - and when it all comes together (very rarely) - the last 5% exists to make it Art. Not all of Picasso's work is Art, even though he was an artist - most of it was exploring the craft, occasionally a Guernica would be produced.

So -- anyone can be an Artist, no one really has a "natural talent", some are blessed with potential and finally, it is the Work and most likely a lot of work.
