Creative, arty question, collage, help!!?

hi, i am doing a collage in Art, of my face. For an A3 piece of work- just my head, i need ideas for types of collage i could use to fill up the face- and clearly showing light and dark areas. Ideas have been to cut out pictures from magazines of different skin tones- but i find that a little too obvious. The materials need to be easily accessible or cheap, but otherwise the boundaries are very much wide open.
I will definitely vote for a best answer- so be creative and detailed.

Lots of ideas, why not consider some of the following:

Tissue paper
Fabrics, haberdashery items(wool, cotton reels, braid, lace trims)
Cotton wool
Food (lentils etc)
pencil shavings
painted newspapers
packaging

Hope some of this has inspired you!
