Question:

Are all art critics pretentious?

If art is subjective then how can critics claim to know 'good art' from 'bad art'. I'm asking this with particular reference to Jackson Pollock's work Number 5,1948 which can be seen at http://music.columbia.edu/~chris/diss.fl... and has recently sold for $140 million. I realise that the monetary value is determined by the buyer rather than the critic but i fail to see the 'meaning' in this piece; will everyone please leave their opinion.

Yes...art critics are pretentious...and not nearly as knowledgeable as they would lead you to believe. Art is subjective to a point. Does it make you feel any emotion at all? (even hate) If so then it is a successful piece. Basically there are 16 elements and principles of good design, I think critics should have to know and follow them before writing a review.
