Not really. It depends on your definition of adult. My 90 year old Grandmother says that she feels like a 16 year old inside! I have friends who had babies very young (16) and they really grew up quickly, but some parts of them are still quite immature. I think a part of our confusion is that we don't really have rites of passage anymore in Western society, tests that help us transition into the next stage of our lives, as witnessed and supported by our communities. At 14 I thought I was an adult, but in retrospect I was such a typical angsty pubescent girl, longing for the freedoms I imagined that adulthood would bring. I think that maturity and adulthood come as a reward (or punishment?) for all the challenges we overcome as we age.
