My dad (who is here watching it on TV with us and wanted to know) says that the theme of the story is that the people think everything that happens is for the best, even bad things - and they learn that it isnt always the case. thanks for answers though. happy nw year.

Bernstein's opera "Candide" was based on my favorite book of the same name, written by satirist Francois Marie Arouet, who used the pen-name "Voltaire".
