Question:

I really love to write, and I really Hate math. Put the two together? I get insulted?

I was required to write an essay in math, using the typical style of writing and everything. I did so, turned it in, didn't get it back for a while. Later, my mom tells me she read it and laughed her but off because I guess I added a bit of humor in there I wasn't aware of, but she told me he loved it. I constantly get compliments on my writing skills, which I am obviously proud of. But, when I got my score, I wasn't all that thrilled, but i accepted it. Then I heard my teacher tell a few students who went up to get their paper that she kept theirs because they were better than most of the classes. Needless to say, I was pretty shot down. I thought I did really well on the paper. I thought I deserved a better score, and then I hear I had a bad paper! I don't know if I should ask her about it, or what. I mean, she's not even a Lit teacher! She didn't mark my paper up with corrections or anything! I wan't to talk to her, but I don't want to seem snobbish about my work.

As a former teacher, I can tell you that you should follow your mom's advice and talk to your teacher. Sometimes, you have to write in different ways for different teachers. What one teacher likes may not be the forte of another. It sounds to me that you are a creative person who operates more from the right side of the brain. Mathematicians usually operate on the left side of the brain and write in a more technical manner. Definitely talk to your teacher, after or before class. Ask her to critique your paper and advise you as to what she would like to see in your essays. Also, point out some points that you thought were good in your essay. It takes a very long time to mark a class set of essays. Perhaps she missed something. She might even raise your grade for a half mark. Teachers are there to teach and help you to learn and succeed. A good teacher would want you to come to her. If your teacher has her own agenda and insults you or won't give you any time, you should see your vice principal...at the very least, the head of the math department. Asking for assistance does not denote snobbery. Rather it means that you want to do your very best.
