write a poem from your own vantage. better to write about something you know about. there is no wisdom in trying to prove wisdom based on conjecture. conjecture is boring is the laymans common knowledge so stick with something you think only someone in your shoes would know first hand in a way others can appreciate.
trying to write a poem from a soldier's vantage without first being so is insulting and degrading to the author themself a fool. that is a horrible suggestion by the first two posters. writing about the war from the vantage of a confused civillian is another matter entirely, because that may be yours. just as a soldier writing a poem from the vantage of a confused civillian would be equally distateful and inappropriate.
getting away from that now, i have found brainstorming works alot. there is no solid rule for poety unless you want to follow a pattern style. random rantings from your mind might be one work. writing many simple short poems about different thoughts and then collapsing each poem into a one tag line synopsis and collaging them together is something i have done a few times and turns into a nice time burning project if all you really have is time and a notebook handy. I developed this technique into what I consider 'reverse engineering Dylan' and the end product is something just a tad more coherent than his rambling style.
