I've never heard of a spirt trap. There are dream catchers that can be viewed as a piece of hanging art or they have the following meaning for Native Americans. The dream catchers resemble a spider web, with open areas. You hang it above your bed and as you dream, the bad dreams are suppose to go through the spaces and good dreams are 'caught' by the web.
The good dreams have positive energy and good feelings associated with them and that energy/feeling, is stored in the web to radiate out over you, while you sleep. This is the way it was described to me, many years ago.
