The major differences are perspective, the ability to portray the subject matter in a visually pleasing three dimensional manner, and the subject matter. During the renaissance the common people were shown in classic poses and at everyday activities where medieval art generally was religious in nature. The refinement in technique and paint manufacture (albeit by the artists themselves) also shows an obvious difference.
