Question:

What is it that makes an antique an antique?

How old must something be to be an antique?

My mom had a military issue woman's trench coat that I decided I wanted. It was given to her in Basic Training, if she remembers correctly. She's now been retired for near two years after 23years in the AirForce. Is that lovely trench coat an antique? I wonder only for the novelty of knowing, as it's mine now and will remain that way.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:

Age, quality and rarety.
Age varies according to material : paper will age faster than wood, wood faster than metal, metal faster than stone.
An 80 year-old chair may be antique but if it were manufactured in the thousands, it's not worth a lot unless it is high quality and still sturdy.
The piece of clothing you are refering to is not close to getting the antique status because it is not high quality and it is mass production. It may have a lot of sentimental value and it is not worthless to a collectionner's eye.
