Question:

What is cultural relativism and why is it important to the appreciation of art?

What is cultural relativism and why is it important to the appreciation of art?

(I have the general definition of cultural relativism which is:
Cultural relativism proposes that different cultures must be understood on their own terms. The beliefs, values, and behaviors of a culture cannot be objectively or validly judged as superior or inferior to another culture. A high degree of cultural relativism seems necessary for the cross-cultural appreciation of art. )

Please help me expand on this. I am writing a paper on this topic and it's really hard to come up with more things to talk about.

Thank you!

Consider Anime (Japanese animation); there are many references, story lines, stock characters, symbolic set pieces that can only be appreciated if one understands each's relationship to Japanese culture. Generally, artists use their "gesalt" or "world view" to create something that will invoke an emotional response, and the language that they use is one that comes from their origin.
