One of my favourite children's stories is 'A Traveller in Time,' about a girl who went to stay in her aunts 400 year old house and found herself able to walk in and out of time - she kept walking into the Tudor era at the time of the Babington plot to free Mary Queen of Scots!.

I love this sort of tale, where good sound facts of history are taught in the midst of a fantasy of a modern day girl slipping through time!. Wonderful escapism and a great way to learn and teach history!!!!!

I also loved adventure books like the Famous Five and the Lone Pine books about children working together to solve mysteries/crimes and getting caught up in the evil world of adults! This again shows children team work and loyalty and trust etc!. etc!.

Lots of fantasy and creativity that encourage a child's own imagination to take them away from the world in which they live (for a short time) is the perfect gift in a book!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Children should be able to hear about the "normal" world but in ways they can understand!. Stories have to relate to their experiences, and these days they are different from Beatrix Potter!. I don't mean to say that Potter is out, but her books are rather gentle and romantic, and the world is not quite like this any more!. The stories should reflect what children do, are confronted with, and would be interested in these days, e!.g!. playing their games consoles, fitness and health (stories around sports etc), what happens when their parents split up or when one of their parents starts a new relationship, friendship and camaraderie (bullying), grandparents or other members of the famaily dying, etc!. These subjects should not be a way of ramming certain values down their throats, but more giving them a space to think and discuss with parents, grandparents, teachers, etc!. so that they are able to deal with issues coming up in their own life without being totally thrown by them and being traumatised!. Life is difficult enough for adults, but children need to be prepared!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
