I read the first volume of Shelby Foote's 'The Civil War: A Narrative' when I was in high school and I found it both readable and informative!. I would recommend that one highly, though be aware, it makes no judgements, just tells the story very well!.

James McPherson and Stephen Ambrose are both readable authors who have Civil War titles that might interest you too!.
