I've heard characters from books being described as "Mary Sues"

She is a character that is overly idealized, with no flaws!. Such a character would be popular without doing anything to be popular, unusual name, unusual physical characteristics, perhaps powers!.
Bella from Twilight is considered a Mary Sue!.
If you are writing the character, one way to tell is if your character is someone that you would want to be!.

Mary Sues are characters that tend to get on the reader's nerves!. However, there are many different types!. Sometimes, the character in question is too perfect and can do anything and everything! Sometimes, they're too powerful, too mysterious, etc!. There are also Sues who are whiny, angsty and just down right annoying!.

They tend to show up in fan fiction more than normal fiction!. In fan fiction, they are sometimes created for the sole purpose for falling in love with the main character!.

Many people consider Bella a Mary Sue because so many character just fall madly in love with her!.

A Mary-Sue is a perfect character!. Usually the character is an author's favorite and they devote more time to that character than any other in the book!. She's perfect!. Everyone likes her, except villains and people who will change their minds later on!. She's usually smart, attractive, friendly, and has a wide range of talents!. Sometimes she will have a flaw, which will either make her more perfect or not affect the story or her character development at all!.
