Question: The book, "The Golden Compass" turned me atheist!.!?
Last year (16) I was "iffy" on whether I believed in religion or not, now it's definitely not!. Did this book have the same affect on you!? I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
So you're done with the Golden Compass now read the Bible page by page then tell me where you stand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I loved the book, but was slightly horrified at some of the ideas!. I have strong faith in my religious beliefs, and I couldn't imagine that the universe does not have a higher force, a Creator, that began everything for us!. You should really look into religion before making up your mind, there are a lot more opinions and beliefs stronger than what Philip Pullman offers!. But I do admit the Trilogy was an amazingly written series!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not sure I see the question in this, but it's OK that The Golden Compass "turned" you atheist!. One of the purposes of literature is to allow us to explore our own thoughts more thoroughly!. If a book helps bring to light what you really believe, or helps you sort out your own thoughts in any way, then it has served a valuable purpose!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This book is fiction!. It shouldn't influence your religious beliefs, there was a huge uproar in the Christian society because of people who let it affect their faith!. I'm 14 and I don't think I believe in God either but I don't think the book turned me atheist!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

although i have not read the book, my aunt told me about the book!. it is all fiction, read a non-fiction book like the bible!. even the author isnt athiest!. beleive it or not they are christian!. they just thought it would make alot of money!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most people who have strong religious beliefs are not going to change their minds just by reading a book!. In fact, most people with such convictions will believe what they believe regardless of what they are shown!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Their is a HUGE difference!. That book isn't inspired by God and backed by history and outside sourcesWww@QuestionHome@Com

I've read the book when I was 12!. It didn't turned me atheist, heck, I started to have doubts about God even before reading the book!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I pretty much already was one before I read it!. It's a fascinating story, though!. I'm partway through The Amber Spyglass right now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You probably would've turned atheist anyways!. This book just pushed your views in front more!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No it didn't and i dont really see how it did for you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

wow, that's sad!. A book shouldn't have so much affect on your spirituality!. Did you soul search first and the book put it over!? or did you just use the book as an excuse!?
Edit: Talk about flawed logic!.!.!. Christians don't just base their beliefs solely off the bible!. They base their beliefs off the need for God that resides in human hearts and off years and years of millions of believers!. One person's work of fiction is not the same as a collection of stories compiled by many people and believed by millions of people over thousands of years!. you also act as if Christians are the only people who believe in God!. The other religions are evidence that people truly know God deep within themselves and attempt to fid Him, most people find Him through religion, and a few seek him in science, nature, and within the hearts of other people!. I am by no means a fundamentalist, but I believe in God and there are events in the bible that even atheists must admit have historical evidence to back them up!. The bottom line is that you can beleive that there is no God, but do not use your flawed logic to sway other people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've heard this often about The Golden Compass, which is why I've never read the series!. I'm not some crazy person who threatens to douse people in holy water or anything, but I am a Christian and I'm going to try to avoid things that are atheistic if I can help it!. My friend, who is deeply religious, read them when they first came out and she loved them, but she never went atheist; now that the author came out about trying to turn kids into atheists, she regrets reading them at all!. I have heard of other people experiencing the same thing as you, which makes me kind of sad, but I certainly can't and won't push my views on you all!.

Edit: That was really rather clever of you to turn logic against logic!. I'll tell you my reasoning, and I'm a fairly logical person: The Golden Compass was written by one man who was out to disprove God!. The Bible was written by many men out to prove God and spread His word!. Now, the Bible is the word of God as it is presented to us, but it has been altered by men and is taught differently by different churches!. You, as an individual, have the Bible and it is your responsibility to interpret and believe as you see fit!. The same is true for all books, but it's wise to take extra care when dealing with eternity, whether the book in question is the Holy Bible or The Golden Compass!.
Any questions or rebuttals!? I'm happy to explain or argue what I said!. The problem with most Christians is their failure to decide for themselves and they miss a lot of their own faith by following blindly!. I personally strive to be logical and understand God and my religion as best I can!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
