If not then what did you think when the first film came out!? "Philosopher" doesn't mean the same thing in America and they thought it would tun of kids from watching it if they said "philosophers stone" They actually had to go back at the end of filmng and reshoot every scene where they said "philosopher", and say the word "sorcerer" hahaWww@QuestionHome@Com The book is called "Sorcerer's Stone" in America instead of "Philosopher's Stone" because Scholastic didn't want the book to be associated with philosophy, which may turn people away from it as a children's book!. There was also some confusion over the actual legend of the philosophers stone and whether it should or should not be associated with the books!. For some reason, Scholastic figured this would be less welcome (or known) in America than in England!. Basically it is all marketing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The books was titled " !. !. !. Sorcerer's Stone" from the start!. It was not released in the U!.S!. as the " !. !. !. Philosopher's Stone!." The publisher determined in focus group studies that "sorcerer" had more appeal to American audiences!. Most American kids know what a sorcerer is!. Most have no idea what a philosopher is!. Hence the decision regarding the title!. The movie was released in the U!.S!. as " !. !. !. Sorcerer's Stone!." And yes they did call it the Sorcerer's stone in the movie here as well!. From my understanding she and her editors were saying people in the USA would not understand the meaning of a Philosopher!. I thought that was a ridiculous reason to change the name, but I still love the book though!. I'm sure if she would have left it as is people who did not understand the meaning of the word philosopher would have eventually understood just from reading the book!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Harry Potter was translated into several languages and when asked JKR said she refused to translate it into 'American' because she believed it it would ruin the book and it the languages were too similar!. But if you think about it we have different slang terms, different words for some things, etc!. When JKR realized this she agreed to changing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The sorceror makes more sense here, we don't refer to philosopher's in a magical way!. A sorceror is magical, and more connected to the wizrding world!. It's funny you bring this up because just last night we were buying a copy of the Sorceror's stone for a friend and the movie dealer told me he had a canadian one with some other wierd title!.!.haha!. To us, philosopher is someone who writes philosophy; a scholar who writes/researches about the meaning of life!. Such as Socrates, or Plato!. Edit: It seems that I somehow have the UK version!.Www@QuestionHome@Com because they thought kids might not read it thinking it was based on philosophy!. so J!.K!. Rowling changed it to sorcerer's stone!. J!.K!.
