Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes! It's my favorite book by Tolkien!. But maybe I am biased because I read it first (3rd grade)!. But it's kind of good to know when you read the rest of the books!. There's some background information!. But you don't have to, the trilogy is good on its own!. But really, the Hobbit is less dark than the Lord of the Rings books so I like it more!. Plus I enjoy reading things in order!. So yes! But if you are short on time, then it's not absolutely necessary!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Yes, but keep in mind that it's written in a different style from LOTR!. Tolkien wrote it for his kids, so the story reads more like a children's story - more light-hearted - and it doesn't take itself too seriously!. For example, the Orcs are generally called Goblins, the Elves actually laugh, and there is a lot of humor!. I loved it!. When you read it, think of it as Bilbo telling the story to some young hobbits (like in the movie during the party scene)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Yes, because everything in The Hobbit happened before the Lord of the Rings, but whilst they relate to each other, it doesn't really matter- the Hobbit is a much more fun read though, which is really why I'd start with that one- it's far easier that the Lord of the Rings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com I would recommend it!. There is a great summary of the important stuff at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings (which you MUST read in order to understand)!.
