Question: Tragic past of a character!? :o!?
Do you hate when characters have a tragic past!?!?!?

I want my character to have this past, but I'm not sure if its believable(It is based greatly on my friend, but I'm not sure if people will still think it could happen)

-Grew up in family that were alcoholics
-Mother leaves when she’s 7 and her sisters 8 or 9, leaves to be with another man
- Father died in a car accident when she’s 13 sister would be 14 or 15
- Has a sister who gets in trouble a lot(Fight, drugs… so on)
-Grandma can’t control her wild granddaughter
-Grandma dies,She is 16, her and her sister move in with their Aunt
- Aunt and sister always fight!.
- Sister is sent to jail/prison

I don't see why this wouldn't be believable!. Very depressing, but believable!. Makes me think of a quote from the Punisher:

"Anything you can imagine Jimmy, there's always something worse!.!.!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

Modern readers normally expect for there to be a tragic backstory to the life of any extraordinary character!. You can thank pop psychology for that!. Your backstory is believable (I've actually known people to have worse) but you could be overdoing it a little!. Remember, great characters can be great on their own terms, they don't have to have a life of pure misery to be interesting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it sounds like a little much, but i think it wil work!. that all happened to your friend!? thats terrible! why is the sister sent to prison!?
