As for British vernacular, the best way to learn it is to read it!. Brush up on books by British authors, early-20th-century & on back, preferably!. One author I can recommend is C!.S!. Lewis, who has a very distinct voice -- his "Out of the Silent Planet" trilogy, in particular!. Or visit British websites and blogs to see how things are phrased, etc!.
