Question: To Kill A Mockingbird - Atticus !?
Atticus says that Mrs!. Dubose is a model of real courage rather than “a man with a gun in his hand”!. What does he mean!? Do you think he is right!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Mrs Dubose was the horrible old lady who Scout and Jem were afraid of!. She was dying of some unspecified disease (!?cancer!?) and was determined to come off morphine before she died!. She was a thoroughly unpleasant old lady but Atticus respected her determination and pride in wanted to die 'not beholden to anyone'!. Atticus himself was a great shot but hadn't used a gun for years - he doesn't consider physical force equivalent to moral courage!. When the lynch mob comes to the prison to take Tom Robinson away, Atticus doesn't take a gun although he could have been killed!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

What he is saying is just because one is more powerful than someone else it does not mean that they have courage!. Real courage is the ability to do what you have to do in any state!. SO just because he dosent have a g dosent mean he has no courage!. He has more courage because he does thing without extra advantage!. ie!. a gun

He is basically saying that holding a gun or having a weapon and being violent is'nt brave at all!. Is'n there the scene where he's surrounded by angry mob and little Scout steps forward!.!.!.her childishness is brave there in a way!. Mrs!. Dubose!.!.!.is she the next door neighbour!? If so, she sticks to what she believes in in a prejudice society!. Hence why she is brave!.

Yes he is right!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Atticus is a model for modern-day ethics, particularly in the field of law!. Ethically (from a judicial perspective), the right to bear arms is not unethical!. Personally speaking, Atticus is of course right!. "Strong men don't slam doors!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
