Question: Would that make my character a "Mary Sue" type!?
So I posted a question previously asking for an animal idea!. My character needed an animal to ride!. The terrain would be tough, as she and her comrade were attempting to avoid main roads!. I didn't think a horse would be a good idea!. And, as the theme of the book is the regeneration of dragons, a dragon as a steed was obviously out!. I also didn't want anything with wings!. But there was a person who accused my character of being a "Mary Sue" type because I didn't want to use a horse!.!.!.I think I've finally settled on an elk!. So I was just wondering, would that make her, "Mary Sue"ish!? Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
It depends!. If in your story the elk is an animal of great esteem, so much so that a legend goes something like "Anyone capable of riding the noble elk will one day rule the cosmos!." Yep, that's a Mary Sue!. It would also apply if riding an elk is just considered impossible or at least extraordinarily difficult!. On the other hand, if the elk is a common draft animal in your story and people have been known to ride them, then you're safe!. You may want to think a little bit more about it though!. From a purely ease-of-use standpoint, riding an elk would be a pain!. They grow massive antlers each year that extend well over their backs!. Unless the rider cut them off every year, your character would be constantly jostled and injured by them!. On the other hand, that could be amusing!.

Just realized I used the same cliche twice in one paragraph!. Woohoo! All hail the king!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Definitely not!. It's what you deem appropriate for your character, based on THEIR personality!.

A Mary-Sue character would be something along the lines of your character getting everything she ever hoped for, dropped at her feet!. The elk is just a small piece of the puzzle, and, yes, can look a tad Mary-Sue-ish, but it's unavoidable, since it's YOUR character!. It'll always happen!.

Mary Sue: A popular, pretty, sweet, kind, innocent, intelligent, funny, perfect in every other way girl without any physical or mental flaws whatsoever!.

Riding on giant male deer is not very Mary-Sueish!. It's actually a bit tomboyish, I suppose!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Maybe they meant that it was like a normal choice but it was just stubbornness!. I dont really get the comment but there is a guess :DWww@QuestionHome@Com

I don't see how riding an elk is mary-sue!. Mary-sue is like the perfect girl in school who gets A's and then goes home and does chores!. Don't pay attention to whoever said thatWww@QuestionHome@Com
