I run a walk about `Oliver Twist` locations in Smithfield and Clerkenwell!.

Dickens was a great propagandist!.

He propagandised against Smithfield`s livestock markets because of the mistreatment (not to mention inhumane slaughter) of the animals!. And he got the livestock market put to pasture at King`s Cross!. Since Dickens, Smithfield has been a dead meat market!.

Surprising with his concern for the plight of women that more has not been done to alleviate suffering!. Well, perhaps I`m wrong and the Socialist State supporting unwed and gay mothers is a direct outgrowth of Dickens concerns!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sandra S's answer is excellent, the only thing I would add is remember Oliver's mother came from a 'good family' she was cast out because othe illegitimacy of her pregnancy!.!.so she would hardly appear on Jeremy Kyle, but she may have written a letter to an Agony Aunt, or now, would have to make an application to a homeless department!.!.!.put it in a modern context, because actually many of the problems she faced in 1840's London as a girl are still very relevant today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
