As with most things we can point a finger or two at technology for this question!.

Numerous studies have been and are being conducted as to how the internet and cell phones (text messaging) are changing the way people think!. Yes, how they think - the actual physical mechanisms in the brain are changing and behaving differently since these two technologies have taken solid root in our lives!. There are various views on this, one positive is that people who grew up with these technologies at their disposal seem to process more information much faster, however a negative side effect is that their attention spans have lowered drastically!. Probably the most important factor to look at is how much it's affected how people read books!. Simply put, people don't read anymore!. There was a time when it was perfectly normal for the average citizen to look for forward to fall and the "great fall novel" (a Vonnegut expression, he was referring to length more than quality)!. This is not too long ago at all, believe it or not a lot of the current publishing giants cemented themselves by putting out a mammoth Fall novel every year or two (King, Clancy, etc)!. People don't do this anymore, it's fallen out of favor and the replacement for young people seems to increasingly be "Fan Fiction," and there falls one of our big vocabulary killers (as well as creativity murderers)!.

People are slowly being more and more frequently exposed to a 'Net age jargon consisting of elementary, and frequently monosyllabic words!. What we see most often is what we use most often!. Worsening the effects is the desire to text quickly!. This causes people to create their own acronyms and use the shortest possible word choices!. In a sense, language is transforming (it always is, but usually in a positive way) into a sort of short hand where the language it represents is being forgotten!.

So, when did it become a social faux pa to use a varied vocabulary!? I'd have to say the trend started sometime in the late '90s if not a little before, and has now cemented itself as an accepted norm!. The key here is to realize that this isn't a choice, at least not as far as I can see, people don't respond or respond negatively to good vocabulary because they think it's corny or nerdy, they respond that way because they don't know what you mean anymore!.

And a final note, since I do tend to pick on the 18 and belows that have always known the webbed world, this transformation of language has been happening long before the Internet!. Talk to a reader who started in the '70s and they'll use language that throws even the most prolific modern reader for a whirl and dictionary hunt!. The Internet simply accelerated the process to the point where it's a noticeable phenomena that can be measured in a period of months as opposed to decades!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

im pretty sure im a "typical teenager" and i have a good vocabulary and i exercise a lot!. im very interesting in "adult things" (meaning history, other countries, languages, art, ect)
im learning as much as i can at the moment!. i dont not want to be ignorant, and none of this affects my social life (which is larger than most peoples) im invloved in sports, school plays, and such!.
please dont generalize because it makes you seem ignorant!. (no offense!)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know, but I'm a teen and most of my friends and I use good vocabulary just because we can(and I hope this doesn't insult anyone, but it's not like we are nerds either)!. Having a good vocab!. is good for everyone!.!.!. People will take you more seriously, you are more interesting to talk to, and you are overall, a smarter, more mature person!. I have a feeling most teens don't is because they feel it makes them seem "nerdy" or "dorky", whatever that might mean!. Being smart is the only way to get along with a healthy life in this day and age!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, being a teen, i realize that reading a lot makes me use a wider vocabulary!. In my school, people get very jealous if you are smarter or better then them, and these kids are usually ignored!. I am not ignored, but notice that i am not on top of the social ladder!. its all jealousy!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think it actually started with my generation!. i was born in 1955!. that makes me 53 now!. my son is 32 and his generation took it up a notch and today's generation took it up another notch!. i had a stroke in 2005 and had to relearn to talk to my husband and son made sure that i went back to the way that i talked before using proper language and not the language that i was hearing in public places and on t!.v!. and in movies!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since some people got used to taking the easy way and dumbing down to the lowest common denominator to fit in!. Aspire to greater things and you may get there!. Aspire to little and you may end up with little, likely will!. Simple stuff really!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have a few theories!.!.!.
When Rap became popular!. When Captain Crunch became, Capin Crunch!.!. when Kentucky Fried Chicken became, KFC!. When people started saying, Sup, instead of what's up!. WHen the big superstars started saying how they made so much money without even getting a diploma!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since some teens started caring less about a decent education and more about technology and themselves!. A good vocabulary is a skill that all teens should definitely acquire, yet I see this as a doubtful event!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Being stupid is hip and cool!. Being smart is not!. Smart is not the status quo; ignorant is!.

Case in point: look who just got elected president!. I quote: "Uhhhh!. Uhhhh!. Ummmm!. Uh!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

When the world decided that having a small vocabulary was the way to become desirable, popular and cool!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
