Question: Question about Harry Potter Books!.!.!.!?
My (almost) 10 year old son has read the first 2 harry potter books & really likes them!. I've heard that some of them aren't really appropriate for his age, as Harry gets older!.!.!.at what point do you think they will get too old for him!? He read the first 2 in a couple weeks!.

also!.!.!.what do you think of the movies!? Ok for his age or not!? His birthday and Christmas are coming so that's why I ask!. I know absolutely nothing about HP so I appreciate any insight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on your son's maturity level!. There's no sex or graphic violence in the series, obviously, but in book 4, the character deaths start, and after book 5, Harry gets progressively more angsty and angry as the war begins in earnest!.

As far as the movies, just go by the MPAA ratings!. If you'd let your son see any other PG or PG13 movie, then he'll be fine with the Harry Potter movies!.

The best thing you could do, of course, is actually read the books/watch the movies!. They don't take that long to get through, and many adults love them as much as kids do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The books are 99% child-friendly!. There isn't any vulgarity or sex in the books!. However, the fifth book is darker than the ones before it!. The fourth book is the first one with any real murder in it, so be cautious about those!.

The movies are also child-friendly!. However, there is a little bit of violence in the fourth and fifth (just like the books)!.

Why don't you read the books before him!? That way you could make sure they're appropriate (I think they are, but every parent is different), and you could have something to talk about with him!. You guys could, I don't know, bond over the movies and stuff!.

If it helps, I first started reading the books when I was nine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Book 1-3 are perfectly fine for a 10 year old to read along with the movies!. There's no sexual content in any of them except kissing but as harry gets older, the books mature also!. Book 4 begins to get a bit more detailed in blood and darkness especially in the movie!. If your son has an overactive imagination I would be careful which you allow him to reads!. Books and movies 5-7 will probably be a bit advanced for a 10 year old!.
I hope this helps!

I would say that the third book would be appropriate for his age, as would the third film - both are called Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!.

After that, well, it would be better if he waited a year before reading or seeing the next films!.

I'd recommend reading them yourself, they are a cracking good read!. Okay, I'm a little biased, but I think it's the only way to make up your mind for yourself!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have read them & did not see any thing that could be offensive to your son!. In fact my daughter has a son 9, & 2 stepson's 10, & 8!. & she is very concerned about the content of books & shows they are allowed to read, & watch!. & Harry Potter is one of their Family favorites, they would read one book, then see the movie about that book!. So I assure it is safe for your son!. You really should read & watch them as well, they are actually quite good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the subject matter most definatly gets darker around the 5th book!. i wouldnt say its the most violent thing he could ever read but im not gonna lie, they do get pretty morbid from the 5th on!. though since he has already read the first two, he's gonna be pretty pissed if you dont let him read the rest!.

the movies are pretty much made for 10 and up!. they have toned down a lot of the stuff from the books, and made them much more kid friendly while still being true to the books!. i cant speak for the upcoming half blood prince movie, that one is definatly gonna be darkerWww@QuestionHome@Com

As far as death, that only really starts in the fourth book!.

There's nothing inappropriate as far as 'mature' themes!.

There isn't a lot of thick profanity at any point during the series, except for the last couple of chapters of the seventh book (Deathly Hallows)!.

If you're not sure, I suggest screening the fourth movie and the fifth movie beforehand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is no sex or anything innapropriate in the Harry potter books the only thing that could be viewed as innaporpriate is the fact that Harry gets a snog with Cho chang in the order of the phoeonix!.

the Harry potter books are a good read for both young and old, so don't take away your son's chance on reading a good seriesWww@QuestionHome@Com

honestly, the fourth and fifth book is when it becomes a little bit more real!. he makes out with a girl, a bunch of people die, harry gets punched in the face, etc!. we may cry at the end of the fifth and sixth book, so be warnedWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think that all the books are wholesome but the conflict intensifies in the later books!. I would read them with him, giving him lots of opportunities to ask questions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
