Question: How many main characters would you prefer in a book!?
I'm currently planning and writing a novel and have lots of meaningful, vital characters and often read books with more than one main character!. I like it, but I know the constantly changing POV's can annoy some people!. Would you say multiple protagonists should only exist if necessary, eg!. if a book was about the personifications of the elements - earth, air, fire and water - and you needed all their POV's!? I'm only fifteen so strong-worded help will be really appreciated!
also, my novel is in the third-person, so no worries about first-person demanding just one focus character!.
Thank you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, you can't really worry that much about what will annoy people or what won't!. It's their decision to read your book!. There are plenty of people who don't mind!. If you've writing a book about the four elements, then they should all be major characters, unless the plot line of your book focuses on just one!. But you shouldn't have many more!. A lot of main characters can get confusing and incoherent unless you are a gifted enough writer to make them all relevant to each other and equally vital to the story!. It is much more effective if you just build up one or two characters, rather than exhausting yourself with seven or however many you have!. Most of them will probably end up being supporting characters anyways esp!. if you get attached to one in particular!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As a new author you may want to have only one main character and let things happen to she/him!. You can still write it in the third person!. You can have several secondary characters!.The man course of action is much simpler and is much more meaningful!. In allegorical writing, the forces impinge on the character and associates resulting in a reaction that tells of the effects that such forces have on the characters!. It is not necessary to examine those forces minutely!. A good example of this is the Harry Potter Books!. Everything happens within Harry's knowledge!. If he doesn't know it, he is told of it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Really - all books have just one main character!. One central character who the book revolves around!. Other characters may be deemed as a "main character" and has a lot of importance, but not as important as THE main character!.

Example in Harry Potter!. Harry, Ron, and Hermione would all be considered main characters, but Harry is THE main character!. Just about every book has a similar set up of characters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The most meaningful advice I can give you is to do want you really want!. I understand you want to work on your craft and everyone can learn from others!. But sometime you can develop a style and that style may not be real popular yet!. So you should go forward with it even if its not the norm!. Could be some ground breaking stuff!. So write what you feel, have as many main characters as you think you need!.
Just let it all come from within you and I think in the end you will be happy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it would be cool if you had many main characters!. Take the show Heroes for example, there is over a dozen main characters!. What would be really interesting is taking all of those characters and tie them together somehow in an extremely clever way!. You'll probably have to think about their past and how to link them together and how to tie it in perfectly with the plotline and story, but in the end it makes a damn good story!. :] hope i helpedWww@QuestionHome@Com

um i don't like having many i had a book that had like 15 main characters, who all died in the end!.!.!.but it was really confusing to keep up with in the beginning!.
