Question: Would an adventure/fantasy book be less popular if a girl was the main character!?
I am a 16 yr old girl and I am writing (almost finished) a young adult fantasy story in which a teenage girl is the protagonist!.

I was wandering if anyone could tell me (particularly boys/men) if they would be less likely to read this sort of story if the main character was a girl!. There are many strong male characters too, but the story mainly revolves around the teenage girl!.

also would boys/men be put off by the fact that a girl had written the story as I know this is the reason why J!.K Rowling wrote under that name instead of Joanne!.

Any opinions are welcome!.

Thanks in advance for your help!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ok cool!. I write too, 16 years old, writing some novels, my main characters are male!. Ok the stories I like are usually EPIC!. Your story revolves around a girl!. I read a Novel called Empress written by Karen Miller!. The main character was a girl, it was a great book because it wasn't really all lovey-dovy but still contained some romance, the point is it was awesome because it had a great plot!. Now, is your novel all lovey-dovey!? Look at Harry Potter, love was NOT the main theme of the series and was a pretty good series, but it still had some in it!. Now look at the Twilight series!. It doesn't appeal to the majority of males!.!.!. why!? It's not the author, but it is the story!. Some may not realize it but it is one huge love story!. Let's just say that guys don't like to read novels were they're thrown into the role of a girl in love with some dude, its plain gay to some men, mostly all straight men!. I mean, I can wholeheartedly tell you that I will NEVER read that series, it's a series directed, for the most part, at a female public!.

Just think about this: Who is your audience!? If it's both sexes then don't torture one for the sake of the other, keep it fair to both!. Love and romance on one side and action on the other, keep it even, look at Harry Potter!. Plus, remember, you need a good plot, but of course, you know that!.

Well keep on writing fellow author!!!! =]Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nah, I really don't think so!. And I think Rowling just wanted to put her name like J!.R!. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings)!. Really, it doesn't matter! The only thing that matters is how well the author writes it!.

People generally think books with girls as main characters aren't as good because usually those stories are modern teenage books, like those Hilary Duff or weird gossip girl thingies!.

It's just a habit of making the boy the main character for a lot of books!. *sigh* But you should think about other books!. What about Inkheart!? Meggie is the main character and she is a girl!.

Really, it's up to you!. And I don't think boys answering this question makes any difference!. Boys can be main characters!. Girls can be main characters!. Period!. End of Story!. =DWww@QuestionHome@Com

As for the whole author thing: no, that's not really an issue!. Most males aren't against reading a book written by a female!.

Some might not like the idea of a girl protagonist, but some would rather read them!. It depends on the person!.

Help, please!? http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index!?!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would say not!. I know several popular authors who write female leads!. Vivian Van DeVelde, the aforementioned Garth Nix, and Terry Pratchet being a few!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are millions of fantasy books with female leads, the most popular, i am told, being Twillight!.

I highly recommend one of the Garth Nix booksWww@QuestionHome@Com

As long as everyone can still connect to the character in some way, boys don't like to read books that are girly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A bit!. Try coming up with a good name the story!. Like Maximum Ride!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
