Yes, they can, but it's very rare for it to happen just because there are so many fan fictions out there!.

You would have to get permission from whoever did the original, and probably their publishing company or whoever is in charge of them!.

Susan Kay wrote a fan fiction of Phantom Of The Opera and her book got published!. I have it and its actually very good!.

Someone else mentioned JK Rowling suing that boy!? That was ridiculous!. JKR is a sub-par author who stole almost ALL of the ideas for her books from other people, and, after using words that she didn't make up, that have been used by authors for a while, had the audacity to copyright them so nobody else could use them anymore!. Her suing that kid was completely idiotic!. All he was trying to do was help fans, and she personally gave him an award, after saying in an interview that she frequently checked his site when writing the later books to make sure she didn't contradict herself!. She started that lawsuit because after the seventh book came out she lost all of her attention because it was finally over and people had moved on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, not unless you can afford a lawyer to defend you against a pretty substantial lawsuit!. The original author owns all right to his or her characters and you aren't allowed to make money off of his/her intellectual property!. Most authors turn a blind eye to web-published fanfic because there's no profit and a few (a very few) license their characters to other authors!. The "CSI" example cited above isn't quite correct!. Collins was a professional mystery writer who was hired to write novelizations!. He had a contract before he started the CSI books!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Generally, no!. You would need to ask permission of the copyright owners before publishing, and in most fandoms, that would be much more likely to get you a C&D letter than permission to publish!. However, there are a few fandoms that have been friendlier to fan-produced work!. Usually, the creators recruit you, though, not the other way around!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think so!. I remember one person made like a Harry Potter encyclopedia and put it on a website and I think J!.K!. Rowling tried to sue the kid because she was working on something similar!. I wouldn't!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, they can--but you have to get permission from the tv show or program!. An example of this is fanfiction writer Max Allan Collins, who writes CSI: Crime Scene Investigation books for CBS network!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, but if it is very very AU, you can change the names and places!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
