Question: Question about Capulet in Romeo and Juliet!?
How come at the beginning of the play he says something like "Woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart, my will to her consent is but a part!." (So he's saying that Juliet has some say in the matter!.) But then later he's basically trying to force her to marry him!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think he's trying to say that if PARIS doesn't like her either than his (the father's) will for them to marry means nothing!.!.!. and that they could move on to the next guy!. Remember that those times were male-led, the female had NO SAY!. They were to be seen but not heard!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think Juliet's dad was telling Paris "OK, son, I think you would be a good match for my daughter!. You have my blessing to try to get on her good side, but if she refuses you then that might be it!." I haven't read the play in a while, but I think Dad might have started to force the issue because he may have heard about her hanging around with Romeo, who was from the rival family!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
