I hear ya, sister! People who refuse to read anything except vampire/fantasy books are really missing out on some awesome, intellectually stimulating reads!. Here is what I liked:

Gone With the Wind - it has everything: romance, adventure, historical context, plus a great female heroine!. It's long but every girl should read it!.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - really interesting story told from the perspective of an autistic savant!. I couldn't put it down!

Angela's Ashes - it's pretty heavy but the writing is beautiful, almost like poetry!. The story is so fascinating and it's all true!. After you finish there is an equally good sequel, 'Tis, and Teacher Man, written by the same author!.

Memoirs of a Geisha - super interesting look at another culture!. Better than the movie!.

I really hope you take some of my suggestions!. I'm 18 and read most of these books in the last 5 years or so so I know you will like them!. And stick to your guns and don't give in to all the Twilight fangirls, it's annoying and you'll be a more mature reader because of it!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Classics: "To Kill a Mockingbird" is really good, even if you don't like classics
If you like romance or gothic type books, try "Wuthering Heights" by one of the Bronte sisters, or "Jane Eire" by another Bronte sister
You might try something by Jane Austen -- "Pride and Prejudice" maybe
If you like political things, maybe try "1984" by George Orwell--I loved it, but it does have a pessimistic ending if you don't like that sort of thing

I just read "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, which is really good and shorter, and I imagine anything by her would be great

If you like fantasy, maybe try something by Garth Nix or Viviane Van Velde!. Robin McKinley is really good, too--I really liked "The Hero and the Crown" and "The Blue Sword" and I've heard that her "Sunshine" is really good, though it is about vampires!.

My favorite contemporary fantasy writer is Neil Gaiman--his stuff is really good and often really odd or funny or off-the-wall; he writes a fairly wide range of stories--gothic, dark fantasy, humorous, even some poetry!. He's written a few books aimed at young adults--you might try "Coraline"--and also several that are aimed at an adult audience--"Neverwhere" is great but some of his other stories and books I would not recommend if you are a younger teenagerWww@QuestionHome@Com

Xanth series by Piers Anthony

Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (a little young though)

Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman (young characters but teen appropriate read)

Blue Girl by Charles De Lint

American Gods by Neil Gaiman (a little bit older but you may like it)

Oldies include Sweet Valley High, though it sounds like you're into fantasy, maybe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
